Kentucky Baptist Convention messengers voted in November 2010 to begin a special emphasis in Kentucky churches to be called “More for Christ.” The purpose of “More for Christ” is to call Baptists to an intentional time of repentance, renewal, and redirection for the future so that as individuals and churches we challenge ourselves to an increased commitment to Christ and to the Great Commission.
“More for Christ” is a way of putting words to what we all need to be about as Christians – growing stronger in our faith in Him every day so that our love for Jesus consumes every aspect of our lives. John the Baptist talked about this in John 3:30 when he said about Jesus’ growing ministry: “He must increase but I must decrease.”
Here in Kentucky, nearly 1 million people are unchurched, according to a 2005 Barna Group study commissioned by the KBC.
Yet, despite our head knowledge that people who don’t know Christ face eternal separation from God, we don’t seem to feel urgency about sharing the Gospel with them. It is a sign that we may be guilty of just being “cultural” Christians – that is, our faith is not very vibrant, and we are going through the motions simply because that’s what our upbringing in a Christian social circle expects.
How do I get involved in ‘More for Christ’?
First, do a personal evaluation. What areas of your life are you holding back in your commitment to Jesus? Are there places where your faith needs to grow? Are you making real sacrifices in order to see that the Gospel reaches every person on our planet?
Next, pray for God’s leading to show you what He would have you do in terms of personal service, lifestyle changes, church commitments, financial giving, etc. Be willing to follow the Lord’s leading in all aspects of your life........
Ways for your church to be involved in More For Christ
Reach Out to Your State, Nation and World – Encourage your church to participate in missions outside your community through partnership missions, disaster relief and other hands-on missions activities, and through missions stewardship by giving to your church and the Cooperative Program.
Here are four specific ways to engage your congregation in stewardship:
- Three More for Christ – Challenge the adults in your congregation to put just $3 more each week. Although this amount is less than one fast food meal, it can help provide vital additional resources for your church’s ministries and to reach lost people all over the world. Most of these funds will be used locally but if just 100,000 Kentucky Baptists were to give $3 more per week to their local offering, it would result in an additional $1.05 million to missions through the Cooperative Program.
- Children Changing the World – Children can change the world. Their enthusiasm is contagious and they inspire adults when they promote a cause. Children Changing the World is an opportunity for the children of your church to lead the way in supporting missions through the Cooperative Program. The plan is simple. Enlist the children of your church to collect change for missions for a period of time set by your church. At the end of the campaign, celebrate with your children and send their gift as a special CP gift from your church.
- A Million More 4 Missions – Youth groups are encouraged to set aside 15 weeks to raise funds for missions through the Cooperative Program. If youth groups in just half of Kentucky Baptists’ 2,400 congregations participated and raised an average of $833 each, the effort would produce nearly $1 million.
- Increase Your CP Percentage – The Great Commission Task Force Report approved by Kentucky Baptists in November, 2010, calls on churches to incrementally increase the percentage of undesignated gifts they are giving for missions through the Cooperative Program by .25 percent each year for the next seven years. This will reverse a downward trend in church giving that is negatively impacting Kentucky Baptist and Southern Baptist missions work here at home and around the world.
